Chapter Five
Vic never said much. He didn’t need to. Staying silent most of the time suited him. But this woman -- their woman -- confounded him, made him want her so badly his body hummed with it. And Alec and Michael felt the same. Although he always felt what his pod mates did in some small way, this current sharing was intense. He could feel the wet readiness of Evandra’s pussy but he could not touch it. It was a torture designed to drive a Warrior out of his mind. The thought of her yearning this way on the back of another male was untenable. His muscles bunched in agitation, anxious to be off the damn bird man so he could pluck their woman away and claim her.
As the sun began to rise over the horizon, the golden rays settled on the thick canopy of trees. The green foliage glistened like diamonds in the early morning light, spilling over the dew-covered leaves. At first, Vic wasn’t certain where the Anzu were taking them. It certainly didn’t look like there was anything in all that green other than trees and plants. As they neared, however, Vic saw the variation in the shades of green and brown of the bark.
“Son of a bitch,” he breathed in awe. The bird people were nothing if not resourceful. Cleverly built within the thick canopy was a fortress. It encompassed the entire area as far as he could see, though he saw no sign of life. Vines and forest flowers clung to ropes and wood, further camouflaging the structure, making it nearly impossible to see unless one were looking for it. The closer they got, the clearer the city became. And there was no doubt the massive structure was a city. All that was missing was the people.
The lead bird squawked out a greeting, and a flurry of activity sprang to life. A platform of sorts was uncovered, obviously a place for the great birds to land. All four of the birds hopped on the landing before squatting down to allow the Marines and Evandra to slide off. Then they shifted to their true forms before melting into the greenery. One trio of them took to the air, flying straight for the highest structure, which was even more cleverly hidden in the trees. Vic was certain he’d have missed the sprawling structure so carefully camouflaged if he hadn’t been watching the bird people closely. They flew straight and true, not pausing as they entered the lowest row of windows.
Vic looked around. They were completely alone. All three Marines surrounded their mate, who looked completely exasperated as she tried her best to break free of the circle of males.
“Would you guys get out of my way?”
“No.” Vic didn’t understand why the female seemed to reject them. Did she not feel the connection between them? He knew she had felt it during the flight here. Why was she denying them?
Glancing at his pod mates, Vic shifted his body to keep her inside their circle of protection.
